Solicitor / Associate - Banking

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

Our national banking and debt finance team advises on a broad range of financing transactions including real estate development and investment financings, acquisition and other leveraged financings, insurance related financing, commercial finance (including receivables and asset backed lending), private credit / growth capital investments and restructuring transactions. The national team advises from three locations, London, Bristol and Manchester.

The Bristol based banking and debt finance team is a part of a very successful corporate and commercial cluster based in the Bristol office (turnover c. £6m, 30 lawyers), which has produced highly profitable year-on-year growth in the last three years. The work is varied and of a high calibre. Currently the mix of work across the group is majority borrower side but the short to medium term strategy is to target a broadly equal mix of lender and borrower side work.

The banking and debt team is led by an experienced partner who forms part of a wider group of eleven partners leading the corporate commercial and cluster. The cluster has established a vibrant and inclusive business development culture which encourages and rewards team contribution.

The opportunity would appeal to relocators from the City or nationally or associates already in the South West looking to join a growing, ambitious and entrepreneurial team.

Role Responsibility

The team is looking to recruit an additional solicitor with banking and debt finance experience to help support its plans for further, profitable growth. The team is keen to recruit a candidate with experience in banking and debt finance who is ambitious and keen to build a career in a growing and busy team.  Specific responsibilities include but are not restricted to:

• Working as part of a team on a wide range of banking and debt finance transactions, supporting partners and associates on the full range of work streams.  A successful candidate will have wide opportunities to play a leading role and work directly with clients and their other advisers (e.g. financial and tax).
• Support marketing and business development activity within the team (e.g. attending marketing events and client socials).
• A successful candidate will be Bristol based, but some travel (particularly to London), will be required on an infrequent basis.
• Build an awareness of the Firm's other services. Build effective internal and external networks.
• Maintain an awareness of the firm's strategies and plans.
• Maintain and develop technical knowledge through attendance at training sessions, reading appropriate publications, contributing to the cluster's internal training seminars and exceeding Law Society CPD requirements

The Ideal Candidate

• A qualified solicitor with strong academic credentials and a proven track record within a similar role.
• A training contract seat in banking and debt finance is required.  Post qualification experience in real estate finance, project finance and/or leveraged finance would be of particular interest but is not essential.
• Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the broad principles of secured lending and experience of drafting and negotiating security documentation. A familiarity with loan documentation (including facility agreements and intercreditor / subordination agreements) would be a real benefit.
• Excellent relationship and client handling skills. Able to deal confidently and professionally with clients on day to day issues.  A willingness and desire to become the day to day “go to” person for clients.
• Team oriented and collegiate with a willingness to share knowledge with and support other members of the team.
• Able to demonstrate a reasonable level of self-sufficiency, combined with an awareness of the boundaries of own competence/authority.
• An ability to adopt a commercial perspective rather than an ‘academic’ approach to legal issues.
• Change oriented with a positive, flexible approach towards the implementation of new initiatives.
