Paralegal

Job Introduction

The role is to work as a paralegal within the Recoveries team as part of the wider Property service line in our Glasgow office.

Property is expanding within general property recoveries (fire, escape of water, impact of vehicles into property etc) and motor recoveries.

The team now seeks a paralegal to work on subrogated recovery claims. The work is predominantly Pursuer with a significant proportion being Simple Procedure and Ordinary Cause.

Our specialist property recovery team in Glasgow comprises a Partner, an Associate, two Solicitors, six Paralegals, four Trainee Solicitors and one Case Administrator.

We provide expert and practical advice over a range of areas:

• Public Liability / Property Damage claims 
• Property subsidence 
• Property recovery
• Motor recovery

Role Responsibility

Depending on workloads in the team the candidate will be asked to undertake:

• With an appropriate level of supervision general recoveries undertaking predominantly small claims litigation with task based work on simple procedure and ordinary cause claims.
• Task based activities on claims for solicitors, carrying out preliminary investigations and evidence gathering to include:
o Ensuring the technical and expert evidence obtained by insurers' loss adjusters is sufficient to prove causation;
o Investigating and precognosing witnesses;
o Contacting relevant parties to obtain information and contract documents; and
o Where necessary and appropriate, conduct site visits with the insured.
• Drafting letters and reports to clients.
• Negotiating damages and legal expenses with third party loss adjusters, insurers and solicitors.
• Research tasks and analysis of documents in order to provide advice to other team members or direct to clients. 
• Enforcement of judgements against third parties.
• Working on cases which are predominantly Pursuer in nature, but which may include managing a range of Defender claims.

The candidate will:

• Exercise full compliance with DAC Beachcroft LLP protocols on billing and credit control and demonstrate a high level of financial management in respect of own files. 
• Aim to achieve a minimum budgeted annual target of 1440 chargeable hours per year. 
• Handle confidential information in line with the firm's data security protocols.

The Ideal Candidate

The candidate should:

• Preferably have a minimum of a degree in Law (LLB or equivalent) or Paralegal qualification.
• Be highly organised and a confident communicator with an outstanding eye for detail.
• Be interested in and preferably have a basic understanding of general contract and delict.
• Be interested in and willing to learn insurance property damage law.
• Be interested in and willing to learn the technical aspects of construction and property investigation as required for the role.
• Be change oriented, with a positive, flexible approach towards the implementation of new initiatives.
• Be IT literate, with a good knowledge of Microsoft Office and previous knowledge or experience of a case management system would be an advantage but not essential.
• Willingness to follow a process driven system, working within set parameters.
• Be team orientated, with a willingness to share knowledge with and support other members of the team.
• Have an ability to adopt a commercial perspective rather than an ‘academic’ approach to claims settlement.
