Experienced Paralegal – Costs

Job Introduction

The CSG costs product currently deals with some 700 instructions a month dealing with a wide range of work types referred from all the different clusters within DAC Beachcroft LLP. 

The strategic aim of the department is to provide litigation costs expertise on demand across the broad range of work carried out throughout the business from low value injury claims to complex multi-million international commercial litigation.

Currently the product has two Partners, four Legal Directors and two Associates. There are in excess of 50 lawyers across a broad range of experience including Solicitors, Chartered Legal Executives, Costs Lawyers and Paralegals.

The costs product comprises several distinct teams specialising in a specific area of costs including paying party teams (challenging claims for costs of up to £100,000) and two complex claims teams. There are also two receiving party recovery teams. An opportunity has arisen for a paralegal with at least six months costs experience to focus on legal expenses audit work for a major customer. 

The variety of work within the product is varied including claims of costs arising from a wide variety of civil litigation including commercial, personal injury, disease, clinical negligence, property damage, cyber, commercial and accidents abroad. There is also a Scottish jurisdiction unit.

What you will do

  • Handle a case load of costs challenges
  • Focus on a case load dealing with legal expenses audit work, most likely at least 75% of total case load
  • Act as a point of contact for clients, demonstrating a level of knowledge and skill commensurate with experience
  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge through attendance at training sessions and reading appropriate publications
  • Comply with internal and external service level agreements
  • To record timely and accurate management information
  • To hit their individual financial targets (which are set based upon work type, charging basis and experience)
  • Support marketing and business development activity within the team (e.g. attending marketing events, client training, clinics and shadowing days)
  • Maintain an awareness of the firm's strategies and plans
  • You will be required to handle confidential information in line with the firm's data 

Who you are 

  • Minimum of six months experience dealing with costs arising from litigation to include drafting pleadings (such as points of dispute, replies, budgets and budget discussion reports)
  • Able to demonstrate strong team working skills and that they are a flexible and self-motivated team player
  • Have excellent organisational skills and able to effectively prioritise and organise a workload/tasks
  • Experience of working within a pressurised and deadline driven environment 
  • Demonstrates alignment with the Firm’s Cultural Principles (Clear, Creative, Determined and Supportive).
