Associate - Construction (non-contentious)

Job Introduction

We are looking to recruit an additional Associate who will play an active role in the continued growth and success of the team in collaboration with our wider practice in the North East, nationally and internationally. The non-contentious side of the team provides advice to clients regarding contract procurement and the drafting of bespoke contracts. It advises on, drafts and negotiates development agreements, building and engineering contracts and supply chain agreements.

The Newcastle Construction group spreads across both contentious and non-contentious matters. The team is considered to be the market leader in the North East, operating on a national and international platform. It is ‘best in class’ with an enviable list of clients.

The team has built up an exceptional reputation and is ranked Band 1 in the legal directories. The firm is on national panels with a number of top name housebuilders. The team also acts for local and national private developers, large national and international corporates, contractors, construction professionals, public sector organisations and education sector institutions. The team is also increasingly winning and servicing work in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Role Responsibility

This role will suit an ambitious and determined individual who enjoys and takes pride in providing the highest standards of client care and champions operational excellence. Personality fit is essential within this team as the role will also involve supervising and mentoring more junior staff. The role will also involve assisting with the financial management of the team. We are looking for someone who is personable and is a team player with a can-do attitude. You will readily take on day to day conduct of managing key client relationships and business development activity.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified solicitor (3 years PQE+ at a national firm or major regional practice) with extensive experience and strong technical ability across a variety of non-contentious construction and engineering matters.
  • Knowledge of the North East construction market with an established network of contacts is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent relationship and client handling skills, commensurate with experience. Able to deal confidently and professionally with clients on day to day issues.
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of self-sufficiency, combined with an awareness of the boundaries of own competence/authority.
  • Share, support and advocate the firm's purpose, vision and cultural principles.
  • Confident and effective communicator. Strong analytical and organisational skills, results driven and pragmatic.
  • Ability to remain calm and perform under pressure.
  • Change oriented with a positive, flexible approach towards the implementation of new initiatives.
  • Team oriented and collegiate with a willingness to share knowledge with and support other members of the team.
